Ok I’m seeing a lot of people on here saying that they agree with Ethan from the H3H3 thing and they don’t see what he said as xenophobic or racist. Here’s a mini rant for you.
Let me preface this by saying I don’t think his podcast was worth trying to cancel him because it was more effort and attention than he deserved because now we see all the people jumping on the bandwagon to agree with him as well. Bear in mind I think he’s just doing the typical edge lord humor bit and saying crass things using other cultures as a supposed punch line, but that ceased being funny ever. It’s not clever and lacks actual humor.
Xenophobia: dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.
Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.
I’ve seen and heard this common thread from years and especially now because Kpop is getting so much recognition and a lot of media outlets are using BTS for clicks. Kpop idols being gay, feminine, kpop fans liking it as some kind of fetish and them being little boys.
There are so many layers to how insulting and wrong this mindset is that goes far beyond insulting people for their taste in music. On the surface there is the generalization that only women or gay men or someone with a fetish can like an entire industry of music that encompasses different genres from R&B to Softer ballads… But below that is the underlying common thread that they are not masculine enough to be considered attractive to women. They play it off as o they’re wearing flamboyant clothing or makeup or have a slender body type but none of those things are exclusive to kpop idols… The level of disgust and hate I see at the idea of kpop far exceeds any other musical genre or industry. It never stops at the music (or starts there since most didn’t bother to try listening to it) but always goes on to attack the language, culture, masculinity etc. And that disgust never usually translates over to female groups. Prince, MJ, the Beatles, pretty much most rock bands, 1D (lets just say all boy bands) have gotten the wayward jokes about fangirls but nothing ever to the level of disgust I see with male kpop idols. The only diff is they happen to be Asian. Keeping in mind many boy groups have concepts that are far more ‘hard’ and ‘masculine’ than any of the above mentioned artists. Let’s not pretend like this is about anything other than these guys thinking that the idols are less than simply because of their preconceived and subconscious ideas of Asian males and masculinity …
And before someone says anything about it being subconscious or unintentional or that this speaks more to western views of masculinity. No. Most racism in history is not overt and is subconscious and unintentional. It’s bred from unaddressed ideas of someone being less than for things they can’t control. And western views of masculinity is just a small part of why any of this is being said because if they weren’t Asian and they sung in English, that level of disgust and disbelief wouldn’t be a conversation.
Sorry this was lengthier than intended >_< Good on you if you read this all.
